Cherry Picker

Cherry pickers are also known to be called a basket crane, boom lift, hydra-ladder or a man lift, and is essentially a platform or basket that is attached to the end of a hydraulic lifting system to enable any type of aerial work. They were initially designed to be used in orchards for fruit picking, not necessarily cherries though, where they are still very popular and heavily used. It essentially elevates the fruit picker amongst the trees so that they may have easy access to the fruit.

They are usually mounted onto large vehicles, like trucks for example, although they also come in other forms. When they are mounted on a truck, they are usually referred to as a bucket truck. They are also known to be mounted on self moving platforms, stand alone trailers and on the back of a van (which is then called a self drive). The platform or bucket at the end of the hydraulic arm is there for a person to stand in, from which he or she will be able to work from at a great height. There are usually two points of controls, one in the base on the ground and one in the bucket or platform, so that the person can move himself or herself into the exact position needed. The hydraulic arms are also able to telescope so that the arms lengthen, enabling the person to reach greater heights. There are of course built in safety restrictions to prevent the entire thing tipping over.
